Sleep In The Dirt

Q & A with Non-Profit, SOS Outreach

Sponsorship and Non-Profit

Big Agnes partners with and sponsors a number of non-profit organizations throughout the country. Not only are we proud to help people of all ages and abilities get out and #sleepinthedirt, we’re honored to work with some amazing people and groups doing amazing things to help others. SOS Outreach is one of these organizations.

Big Agnes: Tell us a little bit about your organization—what you do, how long you’ve been around, etc.

SOS Outreach: SOS Outreach (SOS) is a multi-state organization that empowers the most at-risk youth to access the recreation and resources to achieve their optimal potential – in education and in life – through equal parts leadership development, positive adult mentorship, and responsible outdoor adventure. The SOS curriculum utilizes outdoor adventure as a vehicle to provide a mentor-based leadership curriculum for under-served youth that promotes self-respect, positive relationships, and connection to community. Since its founding in 1993, SOS Outreach has engaged over 50,000 youth through its outdoor-based leadership curriculum.

Three guides took the kids out into the wilderness for two nights, teaching them how to effectively and successfully backpack, as well as have some fun.

Big Agnes: How long has your organization been working with Big Agnes?

SOS Outreach: Big Agnes and SOS Outreach have been working to provide under-served youth with transformative outdoor experiences since 2009.

Big Agnes: What specifically does Big Agnes’s support help your organization accomplish?

SOS Outreach: Big Agnes’ contributions enable SOS Outreach to provide youth embarking on camping and backpacking trips with high quality tents and sleeping pads. The high performance gear that Big Agnes donates each year ensures that our youth, who are often on their first camping trip, will have the best experience possible. Big Agnes’ generous cash contributions have also helped SOS in hiring NOLS-certified guides for our summer programs, which are crucial in providing safe and educational immersions into the backcountry. The combination of great gear and knowledgeable staff allows us to provide a seamless recreational experience for our youth.

Big Agnes: What is your organization and/or those involved in your organization’s favorite part about working with Big Agnes?

SOS Outreach: Our favorite part of working with the Big Agnes team is that they make us feel like we’re part of their family. Even though they are very busy people, the Big Agnes staff are always willing to answer our questions, repair our gear, and accommodate the overall needs of our organization and youth participants. Of course, having extremely high quality gear that our organization would be unable to afford otherwise is a huge benefit to partnering with BA as well! After years of working with their incredibly personable and compassionate staff it is obvious that Big Agnes is committed to getting youth into the outdoors and the transformations that emanate from those instances.

Big Agnes: What are your organization’s goals for the future?

SOS Outreach: SOS’ goals for the future are to continue to provide outdoor adventure experiences and mentorship for under-served youth, while broadening our programs in the Midwest urban areas, Salt Lake City, and the East Coast.

Big Agnes: Anything else you’d like to share?

SOS Outreach: The entire SOS team would like to say THANK YOU to Big Agnes for their continuous generosity and commitment to helping kids gear up for life through outdoor adventure! Together we’re fostering the next generation of responsible outdoor enthusiasts throughout the country.
