Now that summer is almost officially here, and weather patterns have shifted, we are planning out our starry nights sleeping in the dirt and under the stars. For the first time, we have chosen five official Ambassadors to represent not only the Big Agnes brand, but also what it means to embody the Big Agnes lifestyle. Our second Ambassador debut features Adventure Mountain Biker and Photographer, Joey Schusler. We recently caught up with Joey to ask him a few questions about what he’s got planned for the summer, what world issue is most important to him, as well as his favorite part about sleeping in the dirt. Here’s what he had to say:
BA: You’ve been on the film festival tour this spring… What else do you have planned for this summer? Any bikepacking adventures?
Joey: Spring is always so spectacular in Colorado, so it’s hard to stray too far away, especially with 5Point Film and Mountainfilm happening. This summer is shaping up to be a wild one! I’ll be shooting a film project for Yeti Cycles in Europe in June, going on a ski & packraft traverse of the Olympic range in July, bikepacking in China in August, riding in Norway in September, a riding trip to BC October, and a big MTB film project in Nepal in December. Big year ahead no doubt!
BA: What does it mean to you to be one of five first official Big Agnes Ambassadors?
Joey: It’s incredible. Big Agnes has been supporting my adventures for years now, and there is nothing more satisfying than working with good people who make nice things. The fact that they are based in Colorado only makes it a more natural fit.
BA: What and who inspire you to live the lifestyle you do?
Joey: The outdoor industry is chalked full of amazing and inspiring people, so really I would have to say most of the people I’m working with on a day-to-day basis inspire me to keep living this lifestyle I enjoy so much. I am so lucky to work with and be surrounded by so many incredible people.
BA: What current world issues are most important for you to raise awareness about and why?
Joey: Well, as we all know, there’s a whole slew of incredibly important issues going on, and the world is definitely at an interesting time and place. The one issue that’s most important to me at the moment is protection of public lands and our incredible natural wonders. Without these, we have no place to explore, adventure, and connect with the earth.
BA: What do you enjoy most about sleeping in the dirt?
Joey: Waking up outside. Fresh air. Good views. Almost always great company. It’s always an ingredient in any good trip.
BA: What is your favorite piece of Big Agnes gear that you never adventure without?
Joey: Q-Core sleeping pad! Except that one time we went to Mongolia and didn’t bring them because…… I don’t know…
BA: Where is your favorite place you’ve camped?
Joey: Well that’s mostly a secret, but if you scroll deep enough on my Instagram account I’m sure you could find a photo!
BA: Do you have a favorite, must-cook campfire dinner?
Joey: I’m no master backcountry chef, but I do like some cheesy couscous with veggies. An easy and delicious camp food.
BA: Any epic or memorable camp stories?
Joey: See minute marker 11:40 in The Trail to Kazbegi (https://vimeo.com/148894085)!!! Still recovering from that one, haha!
